Industry Trend Analysis - Understanding Carlos Ghosn's Departure As Nissan CEO - APR 2017

BMI View: Carlos Ghosn ' s departure will not lead to a sharp shift in Nissan's corporate strategy with the focus to remain on developing joint ventures and joint procurement with Mitsubishi Motors. In his more Europe-based role, Ghosn will remain a critical player in bringing the Renault-Nissan Alliance closer together and strengthening its competitiveness .

In February, Carlos Ghosn announced he will be stepping down as CEO of Nissan Motor but maintaining his position as CEO of Nissan's corporate alliance partner Groupe Renault. He will also maintain a supervisory position as a board chairman at both Nissan and at Mitsubishi Motor in which Nissan recently acquired a controlling stake ( see ' Nissan-Mitsubishi Tie-Up: Good Strategy But Risks Still High ' , May 16 2016). In place of Carlos Ghosn, the company has appointed the company's Chief Competitive Officer and previous Co-CEO, Hiroto Saikawara.
