While uncertainty still surrounds the latest version of South Africa's Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP), the country's parts manufacturers have called for the inclusion of import restrictions to protect the local industry. Speaking at the first Automotive Industry Development Centre conference, the President of the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers, Stewart Jennings, raised the point that over 60% of passenger vehicles sold in South Africa in 2007 were imported, which is taking jobs from domestic assembly plants.
