US carmaker Ford has revealed expansion plans for its Indian subsidiary, which include making the unit a regional hub for engines and possibly a global vehicle. As part of the company's strategy to invest INR20bn in raising Ford India's vehicle and engine capacity by 2010, the engine production capacity at Ford's plant in Chennai will be increased from 60,000 units per year to 250,000 units. Initially, locally-produced engines will cater to Ford's Indian vehicle production operations, but as output expands, engines will be shipped to markets in the Asia Pacific and Africa region.
