Toyota South Africa is planning to export around 67% of its output in 2008, which would generate export income of ZAR20bn. Of the 220,000 units expected to leave Toyota SA's Durban-based plant, some 147,000 will be earmarked for export to Europe and Africa. The first batch of locally-produced Corollas left for Turkey on February 28, with a total of 46 countries lined up for exports. In order to 'address cost competitiveness', as highlighted by Toyota SA chief executive Johan van Zyl, the carmaker is in talks with rail operator Transnet.
