The influence of Japanese carmakers on the world stage has been further underlined, after Toyota overtook General Motors in terms of both sales and production in Q107. However, BMI's recently published Japan Automotives Report shows that success overseas contrasts starkly with a declining domestic market, where the national players are being forced to make cutbacks and very few posted increased sales in FY2006/07, which ended in March 2007. The saturated market has always acted as a restriction on sales, although Honda has also cited rising raw material and R&D costs as factors behind its falling profits.
