As South Africa's Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP) comes under review, a report by the Amalgamated Banks of South Africa (ABSA) has evaluated the impact of the programme on the industry so far. The MIDP enables automotive component manufacturers and car assemblers to use credits earned from exports to offset duties on imports of vehicles and components. However, government advisers believe this violates WTO regulations and the scheme may have to be scrapped.
