The Fiat group, largely driven by its auto division, beat analyst expectations to report a second-quarter net profit of EUR330mn in 2006 against a profit of EUR217mn in the same period a year before. Net income totalled EUR280mn, one million more than in 2005, while the automotive business, Fiat Auto, posted a trading profit of EUR88mn, shrugging off years of losses. This most recent financial success is largely attributed to the success of the Punto Grande in Europe and stronger sales reported by Fiat's Brazilian subsidiary, Fiat Automóveis.
