The Iranian market is highly protected and imports are effectively prohibited by a high tariff barrier, which means that commercial vehicle sales are dictated by domestic supply. Between 1995 and 2004, automotive imports were not permitted entry, but in August 2004 the Customs Administration began allowing imports with tariffs placed at 130%. This made foreign-branded commercial vehicles prohibitively expensive and few find their way onto the Iranian market, although a black market does exist.
