French car production has declined in recent years due to a fall in domestic market demand and the depressed European market. Output fell 3.7% between 2002 and 2004 in response to a 5.4% fall in sales of French marques on the French market and similar falls in France's main European autos markets. The decline continued into 2005, with output registering a 0.8% slide for the year.
