Strike Could Dampen Output Growth As New Imported Brands Arrive

The National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (NUMSA) has warned that its members in the auto sector could go on strike from August 11, threatening growth in vehicle production, which BMI had forecast at 8% this year. After two months of fruitless negotiations with the Automobile Manufacturers Employers Organisation (AMEO), which represents seven carmakers, NUMSA has said around 31,000 auto workers will down tools as they campaign for higher wages and better working conditions.
