Fears Of Production Loss Resurface

May 2010 | Company News Alert

Volkswagen (VW)'s plant in Autoeuropa in Portugal may soon become a victim of the overall industry trend of restructuring, online news source algarveresident.com has reported. The facility is reportedly operating at only 55% of its total production capacity - the lowest level since opening in 1995 - and with few new projects in the pipeline, the plant's union and management have warned that production could be abandoned in the next few years. BMI believes that the concerns are similar to those at most Western European autos plants, which fear losing production to more cost competitive sites in Eastern Europe.
