Fiat Spat Threatens Industry Growth

In what BMI sees as a classic example of industrial logic versus government policy, the Italian autos industry finds itself strangled in a dispute between market leader Fiat and the government about the proposed closure of the carmaker's Termini Imerese plant in Sicily by the end of 2010. Whereas Fiat insists on closing down the facility as a part of its overall strategy to make its global production more competitive, the government threatens to end all future state support to Fiat in Italy -- the carmaker's major market and revenue earner.
