Production Starts Rebounding In December, But Outlook Cautious

January 2010 | Industry Trend Analysis

UK vehicle production showed strong signs of rebounding in December 2009. Car and commercial vehicle output increased by 58.5% year-on-year (y-o-y), to 85,316 units, and 15.6% y-o-y (to 7,271 units), respectively, according to estimates by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). However, given that overall UK output was hit hard by cuts in production for most of 2009, the industry ended 2009 down nearly 34% y-o-y, at 1.09mn units, lower than the 1.12mn-unit output expected by BMI.
