Tyre Plant Tackles Competition

The largest car tyre plant in the Middle East and North Africa region will be built in Egypt, according to the state-owned Transport and Engineering Company (TRENCO). Costing EGP600mn (US$109mn), the plant will have an annual production capacity of 500,000 tyres and is intended to address the competition from cheaper Chinese brands, especially in terms of exports. TRENCO head Taher Salama said that tyre exports have declined sharply since Chinese producers came to Africa, and particularly in countries belonging to the Common Market For Eastern And Southern Africa
