Court Rules Against GM Redundancies
June 2009 | Legal NewsA South African labour court has ruled that the retrenchment procedure of General Motors South Africa (GMSA) contravened the Labour Relations Act, providing what the National Union of Metalworkers (Numsa) is calling a 'future lesson for other employers'. Numsa instigated the legal action after 203 employees were made redundant in April. It claimed that GMSA did not consult the workers beforehand, as is required in the labour act.
