European Carmakers Enjoy Mixed Fortunes

The fortunes of individual autos majors varied considerably in the first 11 months of 2006. Volkswagen maintained its strong lead in the European automotive sector, with production up 5.9% to 3.43mn units. PSA Peugeot Citroën, Renault and DaimlerChrysler saw their output fall 2.1%, 8.7% and 6.4% respectively. Renault's output declined as a result of sharp declines in the production of its Megane, Scenic and Modus models. GM saw a decline in the production of almost all its models, including the Astra (-9.4%) and Corsa (-7.9%) models. However, Fiat and Toyota saw their output increase 23.5% and 30.3% respectively.
