Malaysia Down But Not Out
February 2007 | BMI ViewMalaysia's total vehicle sales for 2006 fell by 11% y-o-y after a gradual decline throughout the year. Moreover, despite attempts to liberalise the market through the National Automotive Policy, overseas brands saw their combined share of the market slip slightly from 23% to 22%. The outlook appeared little better in January, when even an 11% y-o-y increase in sales of passenger cars could not prevent a 14.9% slide in overall sales for the month. The future is still bright, however, according to BMI's latest Malaysia Automotives Report, which suggests that the market will recover in 2007, with total sales growth
