Volkswagen Builds Bridge Between Rival Truck Makers

October 2006 | Company News Alert

Volkswagen is reported to have acquired a 15% stake in MAN, one of Europe's biggest truck makers. The operation means that the German carmaker is now in a position to encourage, or even directly broker a friendly merger between MAN and Scania, the Swedish truck maker in which it controls 34% of the voting rights. Given VW's stated desire to see its truck division involved in a global consolidation process, namely in the European light truck market, and the heavy truck market in South America, BMI believes VW's share purchase will act as the catalyst that triggers such consolidation.
