Germany has 45mn passenger cars and 3.5mn commercial vehicles on its roads, making it the world's third-largest vehicle market after the US and Japan, with a vehicle density of 589 per 1,000 inhabitants. It is also one of the world's largest automotive producers, with output of 5.192mn passenger cars and over 377,000 commercial vehicles in 2004, representing a third of EU production.
