Mercedes Chief Voices Carmakers' Frustration Over Clean Fuel

In line with BMI's view that there are few positive incentives for buying fuel efficient, low-emission cars in South Africa, Hansgeorg Niefer, CEO of Mercedes-Benz South Africa, has responded to the government's strategy to bring cleaner fuel to the country, saying it is taking too long to implement. The plan will see Euro 4-compliant fuel imported from 2013, in line with achieving cleaner fuel standards by 2017. However, Niefer says there is demand from consumers for cars with clean fuel technology now and fuel imports should start from 2012.
