Proton In Chile: Popular Asian Path Will Be Helpful, But Not A Success Strategy

Malaysian carmaker Proton could be looking to replicate the success of Chinese and South Korean carmakers in Chile when the free trade agreement (FTA) between Chile and Malaysia comes into effect in early 2012. Although the Chilean new vehicles market has long been dominated by Chevrolet, Asian carmakers are making quick inroads, mostly aided by the FTAs signed between Chile and their home markets. BMI, however, believes that substantial gains in the market will be difficult, at least initially, given limited brand awareness among Chilean customers.
