Daimler Investment To Bolster Spain's Position In BMI Ratings

A EUR1bn investment from Germany's Daimler into production of a new van at the company's Vitoria plant brings significant boost to autos manufacturing in Spain, which has been struggling to compete with more competitive countries in Central and Eastern Europe as well as North Africa. The investment comes on the back of labour agreements between Daimler and the unions and underscores the importance of labour costs and a favourable operational environment for carmakers. We expect such investments and the favourable country structure to help Spain win back its lost position in BMI's Risk/Reward Ratings for the autos industry in Europe.
