National Car Brand: Good In Theory But Difficult In Practice

The re-elected Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has revealed plans to start mass production of an indigenous car model, the Auto Popular Argentino (A!PA), by end-2012. The project has the twin objectives of developing an integrated automotive suppliers' base and guarding the production segment from declining export demand. While the plan looks good in theory, BMI believes it will be difficult to implement due to a lack of expertise and pressure on the government's fiscal account.
