Can Government Grants Give Kiss Of Life To Production?

Power steering and driveline component supplier Nexteer Australia has become the latest firm to invest in developing innovative lightweight technology in the country thanks to government funding. Four other lightweight components projects are supported by the government's AUD5.4bn (US$5.6bn) New Car Plan. The moves support BMI's view that investment in new technology can provide a lifeline to Australia's dwindling auto production industry (see 'The Future's Bright: Electric Projects Can Spark Production Revival', March 17 2011).
