BAIC Set For Chinese Success

China's Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC Group) has established a joint venture (JV) with Russia's AMS Auto with the view to undertaking assembly, manufacturing and sales of commercial vehicle in the country. Chinese carmakers enjoyed significant success in Russia when entering the market in 2004, although that trend slowed in 2008 following import restrictions introduced by the Russian government. Given that significant restrictions on foreign carmakers remain in place, BAIC's move indicates that the Chinese firm is keen on strengthening its presence in the market by localising its operations in the country.
